Irish Titan recently hired Tony Ticknor as our first ever Technology Director. With a strong agency background, Tony is a great fit to lead our development team. We sat down with Tony to ask him more about his career and background, how he found Irish Titan, and what he’s looking forward to with his team.
Prior to joining the team at Irish Titan, I’ve worked in software engineering and digital strategy at The Nerdery, Riley Hayes, Optum, Taylor Corporation, and Northwest Airlines.
How did you get started coding?
I started getting interested in coding in the early 90s. After playing a few MUDs I wanted to know how to code my own game so I started writing “choose your own adventure” games with extremely simple logic using BASIC.
Following that, I became a geocities homesteader and taught myself to write HTML by viewing the source of other pages. When I got stumped or couldn’t figure something out I’d get a book from the library.
While I was improving my coding skills, I was also developing marketing and design skills by handling all the promotional materials for the band I was playing in at the time. Because of the interactive nature of the media necessary on websites for musicians I taught myself Flash and ActionScript.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Why Irish Titan?
As a part of the Twin Cities development community, I’d heard of Irish Titan for a number of years. It’s ideology - business first, online second - really appeals to me. Too often those involved in the development of software get caught up in the “how” and don’t focus enough on “why”.
All it took was one meeting with Darin and it was clear no one at Irish Titan selects technology because it’s cool for developers - instead opting for what actually works for clients. I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity like this to lead a philosophically grounded team of capable and passionate developers.
What are you most excited about for your new role?
What excites me the most is the opportunity to shape and grow the Irish Titan technology team. While the team is clearly passionate, skilled, and works well together, there’s always room for improvement, there are always new technologies to learn, and of course new adventures to have.
Any secret talents or skills?
I went to school for a music degree, so I play a number of instruments. And if you sneak up on me with my headphones on it’s likely I’ll be air drumming. It helps me think.
I brew my own cold press coffee and at any given moment I have a few gallons of coffee in my refrigerator at home. Trust me when I say you DO NOT want me to run low.
